MSI Academic Advising

  • The "Orientation Advisor" is not a permanent assignment. Students may seek advising from the faculty members of their choice at any time. There is no paper work involved. Special Note: K-12 School Media program students MUST see Clinical Assistant Professor Kristin Fontichiaro each term.

  • During registration, if a course is full, add yourself to the online wait list. Graduating students will have priority. If a seat isn't opened for you by the start of the term, attend the first class and e-mail the instructor. Instructors should send approvals to umsi.registrar@umich.edu. If you don't meet stated prerequisites, e-mail the instructor before registering (an override is not required). For SI 690 and 681/internship, contact Joanna Kroll at jckroll@umich.edu for approval.

  • Students can transfer credit from another institution after completing at least eight credit hours toward the MSI with at least a "B" average. The transfer courses:

    • Must have been taken within the last five years, and you must have received a grade of at least a B
    • Must be graduate level and not have applied toward any other degree or certificate
    • Must be from an ALA-accredited school if they are courses in library/information sciences

To obtain the form for transfer credit, see Heather Carpenter in 3360 North Quad.

  • You can drop and add courses online through Wolverine Access up to the third week of the regular term, and up to the second week of the first half-term session without receiving a "W" for withdrawal on your transcript (you can avoid the "W" up to the second week of the second half-term session also but you must drop in person at the Registrar's Office). After the third week, you must obtain a drop/add form from 3360 North Quad, have it signed by the instructor and SI Registrar Marsha Antal, and hand-deliver it to the Registrar's Office (1210 LSA). You must drop classes before the last day of class to avoid receiving a grade that will affect your GPA.

  • Every MSI student must complete at least three credit hours (maximum six) of external cognate coursework at the graduate level with a grade of B- or better.

Any Rackham-approved, graduate-level course can count as an external cognate (see https://secure.rackham.umich.edu/academic_information/programs/#annarbor), and any cross-listed course can count as long as SI is not the home department. You don't need faculty approval for your external cognate credits. To take more than six external cognate credits, you need to fill out the petition form from the Office of Student Affairs, 3360 North Quad.

  • You may request a change of specialization via an e-mail to umsi.registrar@umich.edu with a subject heading "Specialization change request." In the e-mail include your name, ID number, current specialization, new specialization requested, and expected term of graduation. Specialization change requests must be made before your term of graduation.

  • Meet with Xiao-wen Zou (SI academic advisor) for an advising session to discuss a second specialization. We encourage you to meet with relevant faculty for advising on your decision as well. Your request must be made before your term of graduation.

  • To withdraw from all classes/credits for a given term, you must complete a withdrawal form and have the approval of your academic unit. It is strongly recommended that you do this before the drop/add deadline of the designated term to avoid a "W" on your transcript and monetary penalties. Please meet with Xiao-wen Zou or Judy Lawson to discuss your situation.

If you decide to take a term off and have not registered for any classes, you do not need to submit any paperwork, but should notify the SI Office of Student Affairs of your intentions. Students not enrolling within a year (12 months) will have to apply for readmission to SI.

  • The TAPS are designed to help you track the courses you take and plan to take. You should update your TAPS each term. If you enter SI in winter term, you may use the TAPS from the fall term before that winter term or after it. Your TAPS should be filled out and up-to-date for faculty advising and for graduation advising. You may also count new courses added to the next year's TAPS, but you are only held to the requirements on the TAPS for the academic year you entered SI.

  • Students who wish to complete the Tailored program must write a statement (2-3 pages double-spaced) outlining their academic and professional career goals. This plan should be updated each term with a faculty advisor during the advising period. As part of the graduation application, submit the plan via e-mail to the Tailored Program coordinator, Professor Chuck Severance (csev@umich.edu), for final approval and cc Xiao-wen Zou: zxwen@umich.edu. This statement will become part of the graduation audit.

  • You are allowed to take up to three credits as independent study with a professor who is willing to supervise your work. You may propose a topic or project to a faculty member and seek their input and approval. If the independent study is more than three credits, you will need to fill out the petition form from the Office of Student Affairs, 3360 North Quad. The professor can e-mail approval for your independent study to umsi.registrar@umich.edu.

  • Students who started in fall 2008 or after are required to earn at least eight (8) and no more than 15 PEP credits in order to graduate. You can earn these PEP credits through designated courses or credit-based internships. Please review the PEP area of the website or contact Joanna Kroll at jckroll@umich.edu to learn more.

  • If you need an academic letter written on official UMSI letterhead, such as an OPT letter, a letter regarding enrollment status, etc., please send your request to umsi.registrar@umich.edu. Be sure to include your name, U-M ID number, and the exact information you need included in the letter. Please allow two business days for processing.

  • Please view information on degree requirements. Some requirements offer a waiver option.  If you would like to request a waiver, email your request to the UMSI School Registrar, Marsha Antal, at umsi.registrar@umich.edu.  Include a course description (syllabus if available) and transcript with your request.  You are strongly encouraged to request course waivers during the first two weeks of October and/or February. Note that waivers do not reduce the 48 credits required for the degree, but enable you to select alternative courses.

  • The method of grading graduate students is the letter-grade system (A, B, C), except for credit-based internships. Grades of "D," "E," or "U" cannot be used in fulfillment of degree requirements. In order to graduate, you must complete 48 hours of graduate coursework with a minimum cumulative GPA of "B" (a 3.0 equates to a "B") including all required coursework.

  • All applicants must include GRE scores taken within the past five (5) years - general test only.  Only those applicants who already possess a PhD are exempt from including GRE Scores with their application. The U-M institution code is 1839, department code is 4701. For more info go to www.gre.org

  • While it is possible to petition to use the GMAT rather than the GRE, the decision on this question rests with the Admissions Committee.  Please send a request to umsi.admissions@umich.edu explaining why you would like to use the GMAT.  Exceptions are also made for dual degree students.

  • There is no minimum GRE score required.  Average GRE scores of our admitted students is as follows:

    V=587
    Q=680
    A=5.0/6.0

  • The average GPA of admitted students is around 3.5.  We do periodically admit applicants with UG GPAs less than 3.0, based on the strength of their overall application.

  • All applicants who are non-native speakers of English.  Applicants who have earned a degree from an institution where the language of instruction is English exclusively are exempt from taking the TOEFL/MELAB/or IELTS.

  •  The minimum TOEFL score is 250 or higher on the computer-based test; 100 or higher on the Internet-based-test.

The minimum IELTS score is 7.0.

  •  The U-M institution code is 1839, department code is 99 (none).

  • We have learned that many prospective applicants have difficulty in scheduling TOEFL tests dates due to the limited spaces and test dates available. To ease this burden on applicants, we also accept official test scores from the International English Language Testing System (IELTS).

  • SI accepts up to six (6) credits of graduate level transfer credit for Masters students only.  You do have to be a current student in good standing in order to request the transfer, so you must finish eight (8) credit hours here first.  For the courses you wish to transfer, they must be graduate level, you must have obtained a B or better, you must not have used them towards any diploma or certificate, and the courses must be approved into your academic plan here (this is usually not a problem if they are relevant).

  • Full time enrollment is defined in two different ways.  For tuition assessment purposes, full time term tuition rates apply to enrollment for a minimum of 9 credit hours in the full term (Fall, Winter).  To be considered full time for financial aid purposes, enrollment at the level of 8 credit hours or above is required in the full term (Fall, Winter).  At SI, a full time course load generally consists of 12 credit hours.

  • The School of Information does not make the decisions on residency requirements. Instead, these questions are decided by the UM Office of the Registrar: http://www.umich.edu/~regoff/resreg.html

  • Please visit our Class Schedule to see a listing of SI courses.

  • Information and Business
    Information and Law
    Information and Public Policy
    Information and Nursing
    Information and Social Work
    Information and Medicine
    Information and Fine Arts

More information about these degrees can be found here

Students may also do a dual degree with any Rackham program with permission from both programs.

  • Tuition is determined by where the student is enrolled the first year and the second year. The third year, tuition will be charged by the higher one.

  • The MSI program is 48 credit hours, taking 2 years (4 semesters) of full time study.

  • 36 credit hours course work.  It usually takes 4-6 years to complete the doctoral program.

  • Campus visits can be arranged by contacting the admissions office at umsi.admissions@umich.edu.  Prospects can tour campus, tour SI, attend a class, and meet with a current student.

  • If you have not yet completed your bachelor’s degree you will be admitted on a conditional basis.  When we receive your transcript with degree posted, your status will change to Regular.

  • UMSI offers students a flexible enrollment with the Not a Candidate for a Degree (NCFD) admission status. Admission in this program is limited to one term. Alumni -- and graduates of similar programs at other institutions -- might choose NCFD as a means to enroll for continuing education purposes (such as to take a refresher course for one semester) but not pursue a degree.

Academic credits earned while holding NCFD status are applied toward the student's degree program. NCFD students are not eligible for financial assistance from the School and cannot register for courses until the first day of classes. Questions about NCFD admissions should be directed to the UMSI Office of Student Affairs at (734) 763-2285 or umsi.admissions@umich.edu.  The GRE is not required when applying as NCFD, however, if an NCFD student decides later that they want to be admitted as a "regular" student, they will need to reapply and take the exam.

  • Yes, the School of Information offers the opportunity to apply for readmission to students who were in good academic standing (3.0 or better) when they left the program and have been gone for more than 12 months.  You can read more about our readmission policy here.

Financial Aid

  • Once enrolled at the School of Information, students may be hired as a Graduate Student Research Assistantship (GSRA). Positions are competitive and awarded by individual faculty who have funded research projects. Taking courses taught by faculty whose research is of interest, discussing mutual interests during office hours, or offering to work as an hourly research assistant are strategies for increasing competitiveness for GSRA positions, which cover tuition and offer a substantial stipend and health insurance.

  • Some SI students with relevant backgrounds have obtained graduate student instructor (GSI) positions teaching undergraduates in other departments (such as psychology, communications, English, chemistry, etc.). These positions can cover tuition and offer a stipend and benefits. Contact departments that you may be qualified for, and/or see posted positions.

  • SI master's students who receive scholarships administered by external sources to SI and the University of Michigan -- such as associations, foundations, and corporations -- are eligible to request matching funds from the School of Information. For example, scholarships such as the American Library Association's Spectrum Award are eligible for these matching funds.

MSI students who receive an external scholarship prior to their first term of enrollment or through their first year (12 months) of enrollment are eligible for up to $10,000 in matching funds, depending on the award amount, the level of funding already awarded by SI, the remaining unmet need for cost of attendance, and the availability of funds remaining in the annual matching funds budget. Admitted students who receive an external award should submit the original award statement (keeping a copy for personal records) with a request for matching funds to SI Admissions, 3360 North Quad, 105 S. State St., Ann Arbor, MI 48109-1285, or via E-mail to umsi.admissions@umich.edu.

Current students who receive an external award within 12 months of initial enrollment should submit the award statement to Xiao-Wen Zou, 3388 North Quad, or via E-mail to zxwen@umich.edu.

All SI matching funds will be applied towards student tuition expenses within the two-year (four-semester) MSI program, or as a stipend up to the unmet need for cost of attendance (as defined by the U-M Office of Financial Aid).

Note that SI matching funds apply to scholarship awards only, not to tuition support provided via employee benefit programs or government sponsored tuition payment programs.

  • Students who apply by the early admission deadline (Jan. 15) receive first consideration for SI's merit-based tuition scholarships. These deadlines are for SI scholarships only. Students are encouraged to apply for need-based aid from the U-M Office of Financial Aid.

SI scholarship decisions are made by the faculty serving on the master's admissions committee and are based on the full set of application materials; no additional forms are needed. SI tuition scholarships are selective and all SI awards are offered prior to the first term of admission. Most awards cover one-half of SI tuition for four terms.
